Hi,

I just installed SAC to my Mac running OS10.12 Sierra. The installation
email says that the distribution runs on OS10.7-10.9. I am having problems
reading in data and keep receiving the same error:

ERROR 1318: Header in disk file is out of date

Header version number is incorrect.

Header seems byte-swapped -- byte-swap file and retry.

I am wondering if this is due to the operating system or some other issue
with my installation.

Thanks,
Isabel

    Isabel,

    Can you run
    SAC> fg
    SAC> p1
    or
    SAC> fg seismo
    SAC> p1

Can you send me the file you are trying to read ?

      Hi Brian,

      I tried to run both

      SAC> fg
      SAC> p1
      and
      SAC> fg seismo
      SAC> p1

I receive the same error 1318. However, I tried

      SAC> fg
      SAC> lh

And this worked. I've attached one of the sac files I tried to read in but
I tried many different ones and I always get the Error 1318.

Thanks so much for your help,
      Isabel

        Hi Isabel,
What if you read in the file, write to a new file, and then read the newly
written file? In the past this has worked for me when byte-swapping was an
        issue.

          Hi Januka,

I am not sure if what you say is possible for me as I cannot read any files
into memory. I am pretty new to sac perhaps there is a way I am not aware
of to write directly from one sac file to a new file.

          Thanks,
          Isabel

            Isabel and others,

There is a program sac/bin/sacswap that changes the byte order in a sac file without going through sac.

I use a mac, but am still on OS 10.10. I am not sure if Brian has a machine on OS 10.12. Does anyone have 10.10 and used SAC successfully?

              Hi Arthur,

The read in works after I use the sacswap, thanks, still not sure why it
detects byte issues with any sac I have. Even after I tried to plot the
swapped data I received a different error (ERROR 108: File does not exist:
sac/aux/ctables/raster), not sure if this is related to the original
              problem.

              Thanks,

                Isabel,

Glad to know you are able to read the data, but ...

I am unsure about this reference to the file sac/aux/ctables/raster. You are likely running the command
                SAC> loadctable raster
but there is no raster file in the aux/ctables distributed with sac.

                Hmm ...

                Hi Januka,

I am not sure if what you say is possible for me as I cannot read any files into memory. I am pretty new to sac perhaps there is a way I am not aware of to write directly from one sac file to a new file.

                Thanks,
                Isabel

                Hi Isabel,
What if you read in the file, write to a new file, and then read the newly written file? In the past this has worked for me when byte-swapping was an issue.

                Hi Brian,

                I tried to run both

                SAC> p1
                and
                SAC> fg seismo
                SAC> p1

I receive the same error 1318. However, I tried

                SAC> fg
                SAC> lh

And this worked. I've attached one of the sac files I tried to read in but I tried many different ones and I always get the Error 1318.

Thanks so much for your help,
                Isabel

                or

Can you send me the file you are trying to read ?

                Hi,

I just installed SAC to my Mac running OS10.12 Sierra. The installation email says that the distribution runs on OS10.7-10.9. I am having problems reading in data and keep receiving the same error:

ERROR 1318: Header in disk file is out of date

                Header version number is incorrect.

Header seems byte-swapped -- byte-swap file and retry.

I am wondering if this is due to the operating system or some other issue with my installation.

                Thanks,
                Isabel

                Isabel,

Did you build SAC from sources? Or did you use a built binary? I suggest you rebuild. Brian or I can assist you if you are building from sources.

The read in works after I use the sacswap, thanks, still not sure why it detects byte issues with any sac I have. Even after I tried to plot the swapped data I received a different error (ERROR 108: File does not exist: sac/aux/ctables/raster), not sure if this is related to the original problem.

                  Hi Arthur and others,

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I just downloaded that particular sac
file from Iris. But I have many other sac files that also do not work,
including one from a sac tutorial, its not particular to the one file or
file source. Also, I can read the files using gsac but not using sac so I
don't think its the files specifically. At this point I assume it must be
related the the operating system or perhaps something with my setup.

                  Thanks,
                  Isabel
