Hi All,

I’ve just installed SAC version 10.6d-grh110/116 (102.0) and xquartz on a Mac running OS 10.14.6. However I am getting this error, and indeed when I look in /usr/local/sac/aux/ctables, file raster does not exist.

SAC/SSS> prs
ERROR 108: File does not exist: /usr/local/sac/aux/ctables/raster

/usr/local/sac/aux/ctables]$ ls
16.level blue.red color.tbl1.sac grayscale grn.white.linear rainbow std.gamma.II
16.level.II blue.white default green.pink grn.wht.exponential red.purple steps
blu.grn.red.yellow bw.linear gmt.cpt grn.red.blu.wht prism red.temperature wave.special

I’m confused by what the problem is. SACAUX is set to the right location, but I wonder if the file I used to install SAC might be missing files? I tried reinstalling sac, and I run into the same problem.

Any thoughts? This problem doesn’t seem to show up when I google the error.

  • Derek,

I’ve not yet seen an answer to your question. So I’m about to do something I dislike - give a bit of information, but not actually answer your question.

    1) My SAC install is IRIS Sac v102.0 on a Mac with MacOS 10.14.6.

    2) I’m confused by your designation of your SAC install as version 10.6d-grh110/116 (102.0). This seems to mix the version of George Helffrich’s SAC/Bris with IRIS Sac. From what I can find, the latest version of George’s SAC/Bris is 114. The latest version of IRIS Sac is 102.0. But this is probably not particularly relevant to the problem you’ve encountered.

    3) I’ve not used SAC’s SSS (Signal Stacking Subprocess. Thus, I can’t answer your question from experience.

    4) I looked for a file sac/aux/ctables/raster in my copies of IRIS/Sac v 102.0, as well as older versions of sac (v101.2, v101.4, v101.5, v101.5c, and v106.a, and I do not have the file, just as you noted you don’t.

    5) The SAC Manual for v102.0, page 240. explains a command ‘grayscale’ that mentions it needs executables from something called “The Utah Raster Toolkit”. This may coincidental, and not relevant to the problem you’ve encountered.

    6) The Manual page for “prs” (plotrecordsection) on page 539 does not mention either raster or the Utah Raster Toolkit.

    7) I hypothesize that the file sac/aux/ctables/raster may be a temporary file created during the early part of execution of the command prs then read in during a later part of the execution. Or maybe not.

    8) In case it might help, I found a file ‘raster’ in folder lib/aux/ctables/raster from SAC/Bris 114. It is just a small text file. I attached it here. Since the attachment might not make it to you, I copied it in below, as well. Maybe it will solve the problem you encountered?

    8) Apparently prs uses files from what it calls the stack file list. Have you specified this stack file list?

Perhaps Arther Snoke or Brian Savage can give more insight about IRIS Sac? Or George Helffrich about SAC/Bris?

    Good Luck,
    Leigh House

    • Derek and Leigh,

I am guessing this is an issue with SAC/Bris. George might be able to comment on this.

I looked for a “raster” file in the IRIS/Sac 102.0 distribution or a reference to “raster” in the source, but I did not find anything.

      • Thanks Leigh and Brian,

It turns out I had an aborted installation of SAC/Bris on my machine, and the binary I was invoking up was from that, even though I had installed IRIS/Sac in /usr/local. The solution was simply to remove the binary, and it all seems to work now. George Hellfrich gets the credit for the assist.

Sorry about the delay in giving my answer—been caught up with class stuff recently and I hadn’t had a chance to make sure things were working. And thanks again for the suggestions!

        Cheers,

        Derek

There’s a lot going on in the world right now, and not everyone has the bandwidth to respond to email or work commitments with the same alacrity as in the past. Please don’t let a response to my email get in the way of the many far more important things we now are juggling.

        • Derek,

One more observation. Though IRIS SAC and SAC/Bris (George Helffrich’s) are similar, each has a few strengths and weaknesses compared to each other. Though the differences are generally small, you may find one or the other has a benefit or two that is really helpful.

I’ve been able to have both installed on my Mac, with careful use of symbolic links and c-shell variables. I can choose which I use fairly easily, just by changing a few lines in my .cshrc file and running the c-shell’s ’source’ command to carry out the changes. If you are interested, I can share them with you, though maybe ‘offline’ so we don’t have to bug the entire list.

And, if you don’t already have a copy, I’ve found the book “The Seismic Analysis Code: A Primer and User’s Guide” by Helffrich, Wookey and Bastow to have some helpful insights about SAC. Though it most directly documents George’s SAC/Bris, many insights apply to IRIS SAC as well.

And thanks to Brian for his clarification.

i hope you are now able to take advantage of SAC’s many delightful and sometimes infuriating features!

          Thanks Leigh and Brian,

It turns out I had an aborted installation of SAC/Bris on my machine, and the binary I was invoking up was from that, even though I had installed IRIS/Sac in /usr/local. The solution was simply to remove the binary, and it all seems to work now. George Hellfrich gets the credit for the assist.

Sorry about the delay in giving my answer—been caught up with class stuff recently and I hadn’t had a chance to make sure things were working. And thanks again for the suggestions!

          Cheers,

          Derek

          Derek and Leigh,

I am guessing this is an issue with SAC/Bris. George might be able to comment on this.

I looked for a “raster” file in the IRIS/Sac 102.0 distribution or a reference to “raster” in the source, but I did not find anything.

          Derek,

          Good Luck,
          Leigh House

          The contents of file ‘raster’:

          1.000 1.000 1.000 WHITE
          0.000 0.000 1.000 BLUE
          0.000 0.490 0.490 BLUE-GREEN
          0.604 0.804 0.196 YELLOW-GREEN

          /usr/local/sac/aux/ctables]$ ls

          blu.grn.red.yellow bw.linear gmt.cpt grn.red.blu.wht prism red.temperature wave.special

I’m confused by what the problem is. SACAUX is set to the right location, but I wonder if the file I used to install SAC might be missing files? I tried reinstalling sac, and I run into the same problem.

Any thoughts? This problem doesn’t seem to show up when I google the error.
