GSN Noise Study

The two Global Seismic Network operators have been asked to conduct a study of recent noise levels at GSN stations in order to help the community create appropriate specifications for the next generation of GSN instrumentation and to evaluate the need for STS1 sensors at locations where the background noise level is comparatively high. Harold Bolton and Bob Hutt of the USGS Albuquerque Seismic Laboratory completed their study in April, and Pete Davis and Jon Berger completed the UCSD/IDA contribution in June. ASL and IDA are collaborating with the Harvard Waveform Quality Center to extend this work to longer periods and to evaluate Peterson's (1993) Low Noise Model in light of the large body of GSN data collected since that model was devised.
