Doctoral (Ph.D.) fellowship in reservoir seismology

NORSAR / University of Oslo

NORSAR announces a Ph.D. fellowship in seismology, established for 4
years and funded by the Petromaks program of the Research Council of
Norway (75%) and NORSAR (25%). The position will be within a project,
which in cooperation with the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI)
and industrial partners is focussed on the investigation of micro-
earthquakes in hydrocarbon reservoirs and other environments. The key
features of the project are to develop new processing strategies for
large passive-seismic data sets, event localization and waveform
analyses including the decomposistion of source mechanism and
propagation effects. Furthermore, the project will link seismological
analyses with laboratory tests and numerical rupture modeling. The
problems to be addressed connect seismology and rock mechanics.

Applicants should preferably have a background in seismology and
experience in numerical wavefield modelling. Candidates with a
background in applied mathematics, mechanics or geotechnical sciences
will also be considered. Experience in computer programming (e.g.
Fortran, C, C++, Matlab, Java) is mandatory. A separate application
for acceptance to doctoral (Ph.D.) studies at the University of Oslo
(UiO) must be approved within a 6-month trial period. The successful
candidate is expected to work about 25% of the time on other projects
within the same field.

More information about the project and the position can be obtained
from Michael Roth or Volker Oye at NORSAR (tel. +47-63805900, fax
+47-63818719, http://www.norsar.no).

Applications (consisting of a statement of the candidates research
interest, a CV, which must include complete information about
education, documented scientific experience, and at least two
academic references) should be submitted as soon as possible, and not
later than 30. November 2006, to:

     NORSAR
     P.O. Box 53
     N-2027 Kjeller, Norway.
     Attn. Dr. Michael Roth
     (michael.roth at norsar.no)

The position is available at earliest from November, 2006, The salary
will in accordance with the recommendation of the Research Council of
Norway at level 39 (301 200 NOK per year) of the Norwegian state
employee pay scale.
