POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT – Postdoctoral Position in Volcanology
The Department of Earth and Environmental Science at New Mexico
Institute of Mining and Technology invites applications for a two-
year Postdoctoral Position in Volcanology with special emphasis on
Volcano Conduit Processes. The position is supported through funding
for the Mount Erebus Volcano Observatory (MEVO), Antarctica from the
Office of Polar Programs, NSF.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences or a related field at
the time of appointment, as well as a significant record and/or
promise of relevant interdisciplinary research productivity. Suitable
research backgrounds may include any combination of the following
areas: fluid dynamics and thermodynamics; geophysical measurement and
modelling; petrologic or geochemical studies of volatile behavior in
magmas. Good mathematical/numerical and presentational skills are
essential. Women and underrepresented minorities are encouraged to
apply.
The principal responsibility will be to undertake observational and/
or experimental and/or theoretical studies on volcanic conduit
processes especially as they apply to Erebus volcano and to expand
relevant results from this Strombolian eruptive system to more
general volcanic systems.
Research activities will be carried out in association with the
various researchers working at Erebus volcano including NM Tech
faculty and staff, graduate and undergraduate students, MEVO visiting
researchers, and the NSF Office of Polar Programs. Principal
expectations include significant research and publication using the
existing and planned geophysical, geological, and geochemical
datasets from Erebus volcano. Additional responsibilities include
assisting in the coordination of MEVO seasonal field activities in
Antarctica and in ongoing year-round monitoring (www.ees.nmt.edu/Geop/
