Staff Associate (s) at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of  
Columbia University

A position  (s)  is available for a B.S.-level staff associate in the  
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University.  We seek an  
aspiring college graduate with physical sciences or similar  
background who will assist in the collection and analysis of marine  
seismic data.  The candidate would work on one or both of two  
projects picking arrival times and analyzing earthquake data from  
East Pacific Rise spreading center, and/or working with active source  
data from the R/V Langseth to calibrate the source levels of this  
newly configured seismic ship.  Our goals are to understand volcanic  
and hydrothermal processes at mid-ocean ridges (East Pacific Rise  
project) and to better mitigate against any potential impact of  
seismic sources on marine mammals.  This position is located on the  
Lamont Campus in Rockland County, NY.

Duties include:
Picking arrivals and locating microearthquakes  using the Antelope  
software package. Analyzing active source data using Matlab scripts  
to determine absolute source levels with range.  Data archiving,  
format conversion and quality control.  Both projects offer the  
opportunity to go to sea for as much as 1.5 months sea time per  
year.  However, only ~2 weeks at sea are required.

Requirements:
B.S. in Geophysics, Geology, Physics, Engineering or other related  
field.  Also required:  Basic computer skills, preferably on a  
variety of platforms (unix, mac, pc). Knowledge of Unix and  
programming experience in C, Perl and Unix shell environment is not  
required, but highly desired.   Experience with Antelope and/or  
Matlab not required, but would be a plus.  Willingness to go to sea  
for up to 2 weeks per year. Good spoken and written English and  
communication skills required.
