Title: DATA ENGINEER I
Close Date: 10/27/2007 or until filled*
Summary:
The individual will work with the Plate Boundary Observatory network
and data engineers to ensure complete data acquisition and delivery
via internet protocol to repositories, archives and analysis centers.
Additional tasks include development of software tools for managing
data quality control, integration with a relational database and
scheduling using common software packages. In addition, this
individual will work as part of a team to design and develop web-
based tools for the Plate Boundary Observatory to support data entry,
reporting, and queries related to data management activities.
Essential Job Functions:
• Work with PBO Operations, Network and Data Engineers to insure
reliable, stable metadata and data acquisition and delivery from GPS,
strainmeter, tiltmeter, and seismic stations to internal systems as
well as partner data repositories and analysis centers.
• Develops and refines software programs to support the installation,
operation, monitoring, and maintenance of all PBO GPS, strainmeter,
tiltmeter, and seismic instruments, data telemetry/collection/
distribution networks, and scientific databases.
• Develop and maintain automated processes for IP based network data
collection, monitoring and status reporting.
• Design, document, implements and tests software modules to support
data transfers, error reports and process statistics related to
network activities.
• Collaborate with PBO Data Management/IT staff in the installation,
operation, administration, and maintenance of network servers and
related software.
• Keep abreast of current best practices and trends affecting PBO
software systems.

Skills and Knowledge:
Required
• Experience with network/internet protocols, IP-based data
acquisition systems, network analysis and monitoring tools.
• Working knowledge of Python and UNIX shell-script programming and
practices. Working knowledge of Perl and C/C++ beneficial.
• Working knowledge of computer operating systems including UNIX and
Linux (Solaris and RedHat/SuSE preferred) systems.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision
to develop and document complex software throughout the software
design and development lifecycle.
• Demonstrated inter-personal skills in working with peers,
supervisors, and in planning team-oriented projects.
• Good written and oral communication skills in English.
• Strongly attentive to detail.
• Ability to travel occasionally.
Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, preferably with an emphasis
in software engineering, or in information systems, mathematics,
geophysics, or related engineering discipline.
• At least one year of recent experience in network data management
and reporting, or network administration.
