SENIOR WEB ADMINISTRATOR
Close Date: 10/31/2006 or until filled*
Summary:
The Senior Web Administrator will be a member of the PBO Data
Management group. This individual will be the point of contact for
all EarthScope data services, including developing and maintaining
the EarthScope World Wide Web presence, and responding to NSF and
community requests on web content and design. Primary tasks for this
position include the enhancement and maintenance of the EarthScope
World Wide Web presence.
Essential Job Functions:
• Develop and maintain the EarthScope World Wide Web presence by
managing a web server and all content including HTML pages and the
EarthScope web-based data products.
• Respond to requests from the National Science Foundation and the
EarthScope science community on web content and design.
• Design, implement and maintain a scalable, fully W3C standard-
compliant web site using a “best practices” approach and latest
technologies.
• Lead graphics designer for next generation EarthScope and PBO web
sites. Advanced understanding of graphic design, designing pages for
browser compatibility.
• Works with UNAVCO, PBO, SAFOD and USArray Data Centers to operate,
maintain and update web products. Develops mechanisms for easy
publication of relevant web updates.
• Works with UNAVCO, PBO, SAFOD and US Array Data Projects Manager,
Solutions Coordinator, and Archivist to develop and maintain web
tools for data and metadata access.
• Implements a sound security model in-line with the UNAVCO standard
for security on exposed hosts, can troubleshoot connectivity and data
delivery issues, and connect web authentication with other
authentication methods (Radius, LDAP, etc.).
• Works with the UNAVCO, PBO Web administrator, and Education and
Outreach personnel to provide connections between UNAVCO and
EarthScope websites.

Skills and Knowledge:
Required
• Ability to communicate articulately, confidently, and
professionally with NSF and EarthScope science community, both in
writing and verbally
• Advanced knowledge of graphic design and presentation technologies
including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator CS2 or an open source
alternative vector graphics editor is required.
• An ideal candidate must demonstrate a successful history of
science- or engineering-based web graphics design and layout.
• Advanced knowledge of web authoring standards including HTML, CSS,
XML, W3C standards compliance, Javascript, and Regular Expressions is
required.
• Experience using Windows or Mac OS X and UNIX/Linux operating
systems is required.
• Experience with all aspects of the Apache Web Server including
module compilation, Secure-Socket Layer setup, and maintenance is
required.
• Experience with database programming including MySQL.
• Experience with IMAP, mailman and additional open source email
programs.
• Solid working knowledge of UNIX shell scripts, Perl, PHP and Python
programming.
• Familiarity with techniques for making web sites accessible to
people with disabilities.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills are required in
addition to experience with writing and editing content. Knowledge of
the AP writing style is desirable.
• Ability to travel occasionally.
Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, preferably with an emphasis
in information systems, or in software engineering, or related
discipline, or equivalent education and experience.
• At least six years of recent work experience in Web Administration
using open source software products and tools, including Apache,
MySQL, javascript, PHP and, ideally, AJAX. Beneficial to have
experience with OGC and GIS.
