Assistant / Associate Professor of Seismology
The Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Utah
seeks applicants for a tenure track position at the Assistant or
Associate Professor levels in seismology. Priority will be given to
candidates whose research has a focus on topics such as earthquake
seismology, lithospheric properties and processes, volcano-tectonic
seismic systems, and the dynamics of plate deformation. The
successful candidate should have a Ph.D. degree and must possess a
rigorous background in seismology. Development of a strong research
program is expected with components of observational seismology in
her/his area of interest. We seek applicants who will develop an
internationally recognized research program while also maintaining
high teaching standards at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
There are opportunities for collaboration with faculty members
working in reflection seismology, lithospheric dynamics, active
tectonics, and volcanic systems, as well as with researchers at the
University of Utah Seismograph Stations and Yellowstone Volcano
Observatory. Resources available for faculty research include
extensive data from the Utah and Yellowstone seismic and GPS
networks. The Utah Tomography Modeling/Migration Consortium and the
Center for Electromagnetic Imaging provide additional resources in
geophysics and high-level computational methods. The University of
Utah is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action employer, encourages
applications from women and minorities, and provides reasonable
accommodation to the known disabilities of applicants and employees.
Applications will be reviewed starting on December 1, 2006 although
the search will continue until the position is filled. Applicants
must submit a current CV, names and addresses of five references, and
a statement of teaching and research interests. Materials and
inquires should be submitted by email to seismosearch at earth.utah.edu.
Specific inquires about the position should contain the phrase
'attention Dr. R. Bruhn' in the subject line. Department phone
number: 801-581-7162.
