The international polar year (IPY) offers an excellent opportunity to
expand
seismological research and capabilities in polar regions.
A 1 day polar seismology workshop to discuss this topic
will be held in San Francisco on Sunday, December 10 (the day prior
to the AGU meeting). Specific areas that will be addressed include:

Glacial signals and seismicity
Lithospheric structure of ancient polar cratons
Cenozoic tectonics and mountain building processes
Seismic instrumentation during the International Polar Year
Polar regions as a platform for global seismology

The workshop conveners are Douglas Wiens, Washington Univeristy
(doug at wustl.edu),
Anya Reading, Australian National University (anya at rses.anu.edu.au),
and Tine Larson,
Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (tbl at geus.dk). The
workshop is
supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation, Office of Polar
Programs. More information will be forthcoming in the next month.
