Bechtel Corporation is seeking a Seismologist for its Geotechnical &
Hydraulic Engineering Services (G&HES) group located in Frederick,
Maryland. Descriptions of the position and job requirements are
provided below.
This position involves providing computational, technical writing,
and licensing support for the development of earthquake design
parameters for a wide range of projects and project structures and
facilities under the applicable regulatory requirements.
Specifically, this will include performing studies to establish the
seismic design basis for future nuclear power generation facilities,
including preparing the applicable sections of Safety Analysis
Reports. Emphasis is on characterization of design ground motions/
loads for seismic design input from a geoscience and geotechnical
engineering perspective rather than from a structural/civil design
perspective. The position also involves contributing to memos,
calculations, and reports developing deterministic and probabilistic
estimates of seismic design parameters. Additional responsibilities
include supporting engineering geology and geotechnical
investigations as needed.
The job requires an M.S. degree in the Geosciences. Applicants having
a Ph.D. or industry experience with earthquake ground motion input
are preferred. The applicant must demonstrate familiarity with
fundamental elastic wave propagation theory, and the theory and
application of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. Experience with
soil column amplification factor analysis, including experience with
linear and equivalent-linear computer programs, is required. The
applicant should be familiar with various geophysical survey
techniques and have experience preparing specifications for
performing or subcontracting geophysical survey work for subsurface
investigations. The applicant should also be familiar with applicable
codes, standards, and regulations for characterization of seismic
design input, and have programming experience in Fortran, Visual
Basic and/or C++. The applicant must have right to work and remain in
the United States.
Applicants should send their resume and cover letter to:
