Workshop on Teaching with New Geoscience Tools: Visualizations,
Models, and Online Data
Application Deadline: December 29, 2007

This is an exciting time for the geosciences, which has become a
space-age
science that uses remotely collected data, high performance
computing, and
state of the art models and visualizations. These new tools can be
rewarding to share with our students, who may already be well-versed in
today's digital culture.

To foster this type of innovation in undergraduate education, a workshop
titled Teaching with New Geoscience Tools: Visualizations, Models, and
Online Data will be held February 10-12, 2008, at Arizona State
University,
Tempe, AZ as part of the On the Cutting Edge series of faculty
development
workshops.

This workshop will bring together 70 geoscientists and educators to
showcase the variety of ways in which we currently teach with modern
geoscience data, models and visualizations and to learn about the
ways in
which new innovations in these areas can be incorporated in
undergraduate
teaching. Underpinning these activities will be sessions identifying
the
major lessons from educational research that can guide inquiry-based,
data-rich teaching.

Applications are invited from geoscience faculty currently teaching with
on-line data, visualizations, and models; geoscience researchers whose
data, visualizations, or models are suitable for use in undergraduate
teaching; and learning scientists and educational researchers whose work
sheds light on effective teaching with on-line data, visualizations, and
models.
