The NSF Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE) and
Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) have jointly funded IRIS to convene
a workshop on transitioning networks of earthquake monitoring
stations in developing countries into fully sustainable networks of
advanced seismic observatories.

The workshop will be held in Boston on February 18-19, in conjunction
with the AAAS Annual Meeting and complementing a special session on
“Building Science Capacity with Linked Observation Systems:
Seismological Perspectives”. The special session at the AAAS Meeting
is scheduled for the morning of February 17 and will feature
  - Roger Bilham, “Earthquake Risk in Developing Countries”
  - Paul Dirks, “Building Capacity for Africa's Natural Resources
Sector”
  - Gerardo Suarez, “The FDSN and Sustainable Regional Seismic Networks”

We invite expressions of interest in participating in the Workshop,
with a summary of travel and per diem support that you would require.
The IRIS International Working Group will make recommendations for
support from NSF and other IRIS funding. The Working Group is
especially seeking participants with experience in two or more long-
term experiments in Central America, South America, Southeast Asia
and South Asia, as well as early-career scientists who may have more
limited foreign experience. To express interest, please send e-mail
to Lindsay Wood (lindsay at iris.edu) with the subject line “Out of
Africa” that concisely (one page) summarizes
  - Reasons for your interest in the workshop.
  - Your participation in past and upcoming foreign geophysical
experiments.
  - Type of support that you would require. (That is, airfare only,
lodging only, or airfare and lodging? If lodging, how many nights?)
