PhD position available: Deep structure of the Alpine Fault Zone,
Westland, New Zealand.
Institute of Geophysics, Victoria University of Wellington, NZ.

We invite applications for a PhD position to be available as of May
1, 2008. Funding is secured for 3 years with a possible extension
into a 4th year. The goal of the project is to install a bore-hole
seismometer/GPS array on and across the central section of the Alpine
fault. The Alpine fault is one of the classic examples of a rapid
moving, continental transform with both strike slip ( ~ 25 mm/y) and
convergence ( ~ 10 mm/y) concentrated on the same fault zone. With
this array we aim to extend the threshold of detection down to at
least magnitude 0.5 and thus listen for events beyond the spectrum of
conventional tectonic earthquakes. The first bore-hole installation
is planned for May 2008.

The project is to run in conjunction with colleagues from the
University of Auckland and GNS Science (Lower Hutt).

The Institute of Geophysics sits within the School of Geography,
Environment and Earth Sciences on the Kelburn campus of Victoria
University. The government run Institute of Geological and Nuclear
Sciences (GNS Science) with 250 professional staff is located 20 km
away in the Hutt Valley. We have several joint research and teaching
projects with GNS Science.
We have 5 geophysics faculty and about 25 graduate students. We
interact closely with 7 other Geology faculty within the School.
Within the Institute of Geophysics we have three major externally
funded projects. All three projects are to do with exploring the
crust and upper mantle of New Zealand with a variety of seismic
methods. An over-arching goal is to learn about plate and continental
tectonics.

We plan to fill this position by March 1, 2008.
