Applications are invited for a Research Associate position at the
Institute of Geophysics, Victoria University of Wellington. This is a
4-year position supported by grants from the Marsden Fund and the
Foundation of Science and Technology. The commencement date is April
1 2008.

The Institute of Geophysics is within the School of Geography,
Environment and Earth Sciences on the Kelburn campus of Victoria
University. The government run Institute of Geological and Nuclear
Sciences (GNS Science) with 250 professional staff is located 20 km
away in the Hutt Valley. We have several joint research and teaching
projects with GNS Science.
We have 5 geophysics faculty and we interact closely with 7 other
Geology faculty within the School. Within the Institute of Geophysics
we have three major externally funded projects. All three projects
are to do with exploring the crust and upper mantle of New Zealand
with a variety of seismic methods. An over-arching goal is to learn
about plate and continental tectonics.

We also teach applied geophysics at undergraduate and graduate level
to PhD level.

The position will involve assistance in teaching undergraduate
applied geophysics. In particular, taking field courses and
laboratory work. Research activities will involve a mix of assisting
graduate students with their projects, getting involved with our
funded crustal structure studies and undertaking the occasional
project for the New Zealand exploration industry. Some marine
geophysics may be involved.

The appointee will have experience in one or more of the following
areas: seismic exploration, earthquake seismology, potential field
methods, geodesy.
Applications should have a PhD in geophysics, geology or a closely
related field.
