STAFF POSITION: COMPUTER PROFESSIONAL/SEISMIC NETWORK ENGINEER
UNIVERSITY OF UTAH, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH
The University of Utah Seismograph Stations, a research, educational,
and public-service unit within the University’s Department of Geology
and Geophysics, has a vacant staff position of Computer Professional/
Seismic Network Engineer.
Principal Duties: Responsible for the engineering, installation, and
operation of new and back-up telemetry and computer systems to ensure
continuous data acquisition from the University of Utah’s regional/
urban seismic network of more than 200 stations. Shares
responsibility for the installation, operation, repair and
maintenance of an extensive digital field computer network at
multiple field sites throughout Utah associated with continuous
recording and processing of earthquake data.
Performs the installation of UNIX systems at remote sites. Designs
communication networks (VPNs) and redundant network and telemetry
routing. Works frequently with outside professionals, including IT
specialists and telecommunications engineers, to establish data
communication links through off-site firewalls and end-to-end system
throughput. For new stations and telemetry nodes, selects sites,
interacts with property owners, deals with equipment selection and
purchasing, and coordinates and executes the installation process.
Job requires frequent day trips and occasional overnight travel to
field installations. Additional duties may be assigned related to
computer support of data-recording facilities located at the
University of Utah.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in computer
science, engineering, or related field. Two or more years experience
with UNIX systems. Two or more years experience working with VPNs.
Two or more years with network monitoring and troubleshooting. Valid
Utah drivers license and proof of insurability. Experience with data
communications hardware including interconnection of modems,
multiplexers, routers, terminal servers to data transmission media
such as digital radios, frame-relay/DSL/VPN circuits, etc. (i.e.,
experience commonly described as associated with a "networking
person"). Demonstrated project management and interpersonal
communication skills. Applicant must be self-motivated and capable of
problem-solving both individually (unsupervised) and as a team
member. Must be capable of strenuous physical labor (e.g., able to
lift and carry batteries, equipment, and site construction materials
commonly weighing 50 lbs or more). Experience with Windows, Sol!
aris, and Linux required. Experience with C-programming and
electrical engineering useful. Experience with continuity of
operations planning also useful.
