STAFF POSITION:  COMPUTER PROFESSIONAL/EARTHQUAKE INFO SPECIALIST
UNIVERSITY OF UTAH, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations, a research, educational,  
and public-service unit within the University’s Department of Geology  
and Geophysics, has a vacant staff position of Computer Professional/ 
Earthquake Information Specialist.

Principal Duties:  Perform multiple tasks in information technology,  
data management, and data analysis involved in the operation of a  
regional earthquake-recording and information center.  Share  
responsibility for analyzing and archiving digital data recorded by  
the UU seismograph network. Create earthquake information products  
(text and graphics). Prepare a variety of maps using both custom  
software and GIS software. Assist with the preparation of  
presentation graphics.  Write computer programs to streamline data  
analyses and reformat data for use with different software.  Share  
responsibility for maintaining the Seismograph Stations website,  
including preparation and posting of new information, data, and maps,  
and responding in a timely manner to webmaster e-mail inquiries.  
Answer public inquiries about earthquakes and give tours of  
facilities. Assist seismologists in compiling earthquake catalogs,  
including identification and removal of man-made seismic events.  
Update databases of seismograph- network and earthquake-related  
information. Maintain in-house archives of paper seismograms and  
seismological research materials. Identify problems with seismic  
network data and inform technical staff. Handle data requests, and  
assist with special research projects as needed. Share responsibility  
for changing seismograph records daily and, as needed, on weekends  
and holidays. Share responsibility with at least five others for 24/7  
public-safety response to local earthquakes.

Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree (or equivalency) in science,  
geography, computer science, or related field and demonstrated  
organizational, problem-solving and communications skills are  
required.  Attention to detail, ability to work under pressure  
following a seismic event, and a commitment to providing good  
customer service are essential. Preferred qualifications include:
background in Earth Sciences, with a minimum of one year’s experience  
in scientific data analysis and an additional year of experience with  
translation of scientific data into public information documents  
(text and graphics) strongly preferred. Experience with word  
processing, spreadsheets, database management, and presentation  
graphics software strongly preferred.  Experience in HTML scripting,  
website maintenance, Perl or other programming language, and the Unix  
operating system strongly preferred. Experience with GIS is helpful.
