(Job) Director, Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology
*HIGP Director: *The Hawaii Insitute of Geophysis and Planetology
(HIGP) seeks applicants to serve as Director of the Institute. A
research unit within the University of Hawaii School of Ocean and
Earth Sciences and Technology (SOEST), HIGP conducts advanced
research, technology development, workforce training, and service in
oceanographic, atmospheric, geophysical, geological, and planetary
sciences. The Institute is home to approximately 100 faculty members,
staff, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students with access to
state-of-the-art laboratories and instrumentation. Our expertise
spans the globe from pole to pole, from the deep Earth interior to
the upper atmosphere, and extends to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
*Duties: *HIGP seeks a dynamic individual who can provide scientific
and technical leadership, nurture the entrepreneurial spirit of the
Institute faculty and staff, promote and maintain a mission and
customer oriented administrative team, and guide the Institute
through the complexities of the modern research environment.
The Director is ultimately responsible for building the research,
technology development, service and academic reputation of the
Institute, ensuring it remains one of the most influential geoscience
programs in the United States. She or he will accomplish this task by
employing the most progressive and effective leadership and
management skills that will have been developed in the course of a
successful professional career.
*Minimum qualifications: *Present rank of Full Professor or
demonstrable equivalent; experience at management level comparable to
a department Chair or above; an earned doctorate in geosciences or
closely-related earth- or planetary-science or engineering
discipline; a record of strong research, scholarship, publication,
and professional activities and achievement; demonstrated commitment
to diversity and interest in working with multi-cultural populations;
demonstrated fund-raising ability and experience; experience in human
resource and financial management.
*Desirable qualifications: *Experience in an academic institution at
the level of associate Director or higher; national recognition and
reputation in the earth- or planetary-sciences, or engineering;
ability to generate an academic culture conducive to excellence in
research and education; and an ability to work effectively in a
fluid, consensus building administrative organization.
