Title: FIELD ENGINEER II

Summary: The Field Engineer II will work within the UNAVCO Facility
Engineering Group to provide technical and field engineering support
to National Science Foundation and National Aeronautics and Space
Administration.
Essential Job Functions: • Works in conjunction with Principal
Investigators, UNAVCO staff and other collaborators to plan and
execute GPS surveys and permanent station installations in support of
UNAVCO community projects.
• Specifies station configurations and data collection strategies and
develops related cost estimates and project budgets.
• Identifies and solves technical issues related to hardware,
software, and data communications, trouble-shoots hardware, software
and logistics.
• Trains field personnel and other UNAVCO staff in best practice
techniques for GPS data collection.
• Oversees design, fabrication, integration, testing, documentation
and repair of hardware and software.
• Provides technical feedback on the design, fabrication,
integration, testing, documentation and repair of relevant hardware
and software.
• Generates detailed technical project documentation, databases
project information and prepares required reports. Prepares content
for UNAVCO web site.
Other Job Functions: • Other duties may be assigned as necessary for
the successful operation of the business.

Skills and Knowledge: • Operational knowledge of permanent and
campaign GPS methodologies and instrumentation.
• Proficiency in computer networking and data communications in Linux
and Windows operating environments.
• Basic level knowledge of Perl programming language and ability to
write and troubleshoot CGI scripts for remote data communications and
interfacing with GPS receivers.
• Ability and willingness to travel domestically or internationally
for extended periods.
• Ability and willingness to work in difficult physical conditions,
including ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs over one mile in
rough terrain.
• Knowledge of standard personal computer software including word
processors, spread sheets, e-mail, Internet, and web interfaces.
• Valid driver’s license and a UNAVCO-insurable driving record.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
Desired
• Skill in field engineering project implementation and project
management.
• Experience in processing GPS data and analyzing results.
• Skills in the safe use of hand and power tools.
Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, geophysics or similar field or
equivalent experience required.
• A minimum of three years of relevant experience in Earth science
and related facility development, or equivalent education and experience
