Professional Scientist (Seismic Analyst)
Department: Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology-Earthquake Studies

CLOSING DATE: Review will begin October 19th and continue until position
is filled
EMPLOYMENT DETAIL: Permanent, Full-Time
The Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology seeks an individual to assist
with routine seismic data analysis and operation of the Earthquake
Studies Office, which serves Montana and bordering areas as the regional
earthquake-recording and information center. The individual will be
responsible to the Director of the Earthquake Studies Office. Duties
include:
* Analyzing and archiving digital data recorded by the Montana
Regional Seismograph Network.
* Creating earthquake information products including reports,
maps, and figures using a variety of software.
* Writing computer programs to streamline data analysis and
reformat data for use with different software.
* Assisting in maintaining the Earthquake Studies Office
website, including identifying problems with seismic network data,
preparation and posting of new information, data, and maps.
* Answering inquiries about earthquakes for the public and press
and give tours of seismic network facilities. Assist in compiling
earthquake catalogs, including identification and removal of man-made
seismic events.
* Maintaining databases of seismograph network and earthquake
information including in-house archives of paper seismograms and
seismological research materials.
* Handling data requests and assisting with special research
projects as needed. Shared responsibility for changing seismograph
records daily, including some weekends and holidays.
* Occasional field work may require walking in rough terrain and
carrying heavy loads.
Knowledge, Skills & Education Required:
Bachelor's degree in science, geography, computer science, or a related
field, three years of relevant experience and demonstrated
organizational, problem-solving and communications skills. Attention to
detail, ability to work independently and with others, and good verbal
and written communications skills. Physical abilities commensurate with
lifting 50-lb boxes of seismograms and maintenance of seismic stations
in the field.
Preferred Education & Experience:
Background in Earth Sciences, with a minimum of one-year experience in
regional seismic network data analysis and preparation of earthquake
information products. Working knowledge of Earthworm seismic data
acquisition system, seismic phase picking and hypocenter location
software. Experience with word processing, spreadsheets, database
management and mapping software. Experience in HTML, website
maintenance, computer scripting languages, and Linux and Windows
operating systems. Experience writing grant proposals.
