Call for Nominations: AGU Seismology Section
2008 Keiiti Aki Young Scientist Award
An award to recognize the scientific accomplishments of a junior
scientist who makes outstanding contributions to the advancement of
seismology.
The Keiiti Aki Young Scientist Award
This award is to be given by the Seismology (S) Section to recognize
the scientific accomplishments of a young scientist in the field of
seismology. The intent is to award and highlight excellence in
seismology performed during or immediately after the completion of a
Ph.D.
Naming of the Award
This award is named in honor of Keiiti Aki, an outstanding
seismologist, educator, and leader who died in 2005. During his 50
years as a seismologist - in Japan, at MIT and USC - he guided more
than 50 Ph.D. students and published over 200 papers. He was a member
of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, a medalist of the
Seismological Society of America, and a fellow of the American Academy
of Arts and Sciences. In 2004, he received AGU's highest honor, the
Bowie medal, and in April, 2005, he was awarded the European
Geophysical Union's highest honor, the Beno Gutenberg medal. His
textbook, "Quantitative Seismology" co-authored by Paul Richards is
the standard advanced textbook in seismology. He was President of the
Seismological Society of America, President of the Seismology Section
of AGU, Chair of the U.S. National Research Council's Committee on
Seismology, and Founder and first Director of the Southern California
Earthquake Center.
Eligibility
The award is for recent graduates, within three years of the date of
obtaining their Ph.D. The junior scientist must be a member of AGU
with primary affiliation in the Seismology Section at the time of
nomination. The evaluation of the candidates will be based on the
quality of papers arising from Ph.D. thesis work, or work done shortly
after the Ph.D.
Presentation
The award will be given to one scientist and not be given more than
once each year. The inaugural award will be given in 2008 at the SF
(Fall) AGU. The award will be presented at the Joint Seismology/
Tectonophysics luncheon at the Fall
Meeting or at another appropriate venue, such as immediately preceding
the Gutenberg Lecture. The award will consist of a framed certificate
signed by the Section President.
Selection process
Any AGU member can nominate one or more candidates. The nomination
will include a nominating letter, a curriculum vitae, and up to 3
letters of recommendation that address the junior scientist's
accomplishments. The nomination and supporting letters should describe
the high quality of the nominee's research accomplishments. In
addition, the nomination should include copies of published or in-
press manuscripts that illustrate the candidate's quality of work.
Nominations should be submitted (online, by fax, or by mail) to the
President of the Seismology Section by 15 September, 2008.
