2008 BI-LATERAL WORKSHOP UNDER THE SINO-US EARTHQUAKE STUDIES PROTOCOL

Jointly Sponsored by United States National Science Foundation (NSF),
United States Geological Survey (USGS), China Earthquake
Administration (CEA), and the National Science Foundation of China
(NSFC).

WORKSHOP DATES: 20-23 May 2008

LOCATION: Boulderado Hotel, Boulder, Colorado USA

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 15 February 2008

MORE INFORMATION: engdahl at colorado.edu

OBJECTIVE

The principal objective of the workshop is to advance and accelerate
Sino-US collaborations in three principal research areas: (1) Natural
hazards; (2) Structure of the crust and uppermost mantle; and (3)
Crustal deformation and active tectonics.
FORMAT

The workshop will tentatively be structured around invited keynote
presentations and contributed AGU-style talks and posters over three
and half days. We envision the formation of at least three scientific
working groups (WG) during the workshop, with each participant
assigned to one of the working groups. The tentative WGs are (WG1)
Seismic imaging of the crust and mantle; (WG2) Continental deformation
and geodynamics; and (WG3) Intra-continental earthquakes in China and
the USA. The WG meetings will conclude in summaries from the WG
Chairs, who will be appointed by the Workshop Organizing Committee.

PARTICIPATION

We are planning on ~ 40 USA participants with research interests in
China, ~ 10 USA early career researchers and/or graduate students, ~40
Chinese participants, and ~ 10 local scientists. The USA Workshop
Organizing Committee will select all USA participants. The Chinese
organizing committee will select Chinese participants.

We invite expressions of interest by USA scientists in participating
in the workshop. To express interest, please send an email to Bob
Engdahl (engdahl at colorado.edu) by 15 February 2008 with the subject
line “SINO-US Workshop” that concisely (in one page) summarizes

   - Participant category (academic, non-academic, early career,
graduate student).

  - Reasons for your interest in the workshop.

  - Your participation in past and upcoming geophysical experiments in
China.

  - Type of contribution(s) to the workshop (keynote talk, AGU-style
talk and/or poster).

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

There will be no registration fee. Full financial support (travel and
living expenses) will be provided for selected USA participants from
the academic community. Selected USA non-academic participants will be
responsible for all travel and living expenses (except for meals).
Funding for full financial support of ~ 10 USA early career
researchers and/or graduate students to participate in the workshop
will be available on a competitive basis.

PRODUCTS AND RESULTS
The main deliverable will be a report that summarizes the workshop,
identifies key scientific problems, and makes recommendations
concerning future directions for scientific collaborations under the
Sino-US Protocol for earthquake studies. We tentatively plan to
publish an edited version of a workshop report as an EOS article and
will also consider publication of the workshop proceedings as short
papers in an AGU Monograph.
