UCSDs Project IDA seeks a qualified individual to fill a seismic
instrumentation engineering position within the Global Seismographic
Network field engineering group. The successful candidate will
provide design, development and field engineering support for the 40+
stations of the IRIS GSN network operated by IDA and located in 25
countries worldwide. This person will be responsible for design-
engineering aspects and field deployment of seismometers, power
generating systems, back-up power systems, telemetry and GPS systems,
and will oversee electronic repair and assembly work of seismic
equipment, cables and sensors by technicians and laboratory workers.
The positions duties will require extensive travel away from campus
including foreign travel for periods up to three months.
Minimum qualifications include:
* Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field and 3
years experience including 1 year design experience, or equivalent
combination of education and experience.
* Experience with engineering design, development, and analysis of
electrical, and electronic systems.
* Experience with analog and digital electronic design and digital
electronics.
* Knowledge of radio telemetry and telecommunication equipment
including VHF, microwave, and spread-spectrum radios; working
knowledge of antenna design, placement, grounding, and cabling.
* Proficiency in AutoCAD or other computer aided design program.
* Familiarity with Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft
Word, and PowerPoint.
* Ability to operate a variety of laboratory measurement equipment
including, oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, chart
recorders and logic analyzers.
** Requires ability to work outdoors under difficult conditions
encountered during field trips to seismic stations.
