ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN GEOPHYSICS
CONOCOPHILLIPS SCHOOL OF GEOLOGY AND GEOPHYSICS
MEWBOURNE COLLEGE OF EARTH & ENERGY
UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA
The University of Oklahoma invites applications for a position in
Geophysics at the
Assistant Professor level. Departmental interests range from the deep
lithosphere, through
hydrocarbon exploration, to near surface seismic imaging and
interpretation. The ideal
candidate would be able to supervise students at several scales of
investigation.
The ideal candidate would have a demonstrated research record and an
interest in
teaching and student mentoring in both lithospheric seismology and
exploration
geophysics. Salary and benefits will be competitive and commensurate
with experience.
The Mewbourne College of Earth & Energy possesses extensive commercial
software
and computing labs that rival those found in independent oil
companies. The college
hosts two industrial consortia (one on seismic attributes, another in
rock physics), a
research institute focused on passive seismic monitoring, and conducts
field courses in
both geology and geophysics. The geophysics group has active research
efforts on several
continents that are funded by NSF, industry, and foreign national
institutes. The College
maintains a pool of modern, near-surface exploration systems including
GPR, seismic,
magnetic, and gravity instruments as well as extensive rock physics
characterization
laboratories. Data analyses are conducted on modern PC and Linux
platforms networked
to our own Beowulf cluster and to the OU supercomputer center (OSCER).
Through
collaboration with industry, we have a suite of 3D seismic data
volumes that are used for
teaching, algorithm calibration, seismic geomorphological analysis,
and crustal imaging.
We also have a full range of open source software to analyze a variety
of data for
lithospheric-scale research. Additional information about the College,
its facilities and the
entities that it houses can be found at http://cee.ou.edu. A Ph.D.
degree is required for this
position. Salary and benefits will be competitive and commensurate
with experience and
future potential.
Review of candidates will begin September 1, 2008 and continue until
the position is
filled. The anticipated starting date is January 1 or August 1, 2009.
Applicants are
requested to submit a complete vita/resume, statement of research and
teaching interests,
and a list of five references who can be contacted, including names,
phone numbers, email
addresses, and complete mailing addresses. Questions or requests for
additional
information may be addressed to Chair of the Geophysics Search
Committee, at (405)
325-3253, or delmore at ou.edu. Applications and nominations should be
addressed to
Geophysics Search Committee, University of Oklahoma, Sarkeys Energy
Center, 100 E.
Boyd Street, Room 810, Norman, OK. 73019-1008.
The University of Oklahoma is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity
Employer.
Women and Minorities are encouraged to apply.
