Workshop to evaluate EARS and community needs for mantle discontinuity
research using EarthScope data

EARS, the EarthScope Automated Receiver Survey (www.seis.sc.edu/ears)
is a standardized EarthScope data product currently providing crustal
thickness and bulk properties for all broadband stations available via
the IRIS DMC. Initial “customers” for the EARS products span a wide
spectrum of needs and experiences, ranging from research seismologists
to research geologists to K-12 educators and students.

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together EARS users and
potential users to establish priorities for improvements to the EARS
product prior to its transition to production product routinely
maintained by staff at an EarthScope facility. In a broader context,
this workshop will serve as a forum for discussing the needs of the
community for EarthScope products in support of mantle discontinuity
research.

The workshop will be held November 6-7, 2008 at the University of
South Carolina. Support is available for a limited number of
participants. Interested participants should register at: http://www.seis.sc.edu/ears08/

The Workshop Steering Committee is: Tom Owens (University of South
Carolina), Hersh Gilbert (Purdue University), Karen Fischer (Brown
University), and Matt Fouch (Arizona State University).
