Special Session SE01: Early Warning Systems for Seismic, Tsunami, and Volcanic Hazards
Organized by Arturo Iglesias and Daniel García (UNAM) 
Early Warning Systems (EWS) and real-time/near-real-time seismology have experienced a considerable development in the past years. The aim of this session is to share the improvements in EWS, to discuss them, and to analyze their possible implementation in different countries, especially those of Latin America. We invite you to submit an abstract and contribute to this session.

Session description 
In the last decades there has been a large effort to implement early warning systems (EWS) for different natural hazards. EWS are designed to alert government agencies, utilities suppliers, the media, and the public before a potentially damaging event occurs, in order to take actions to minimize human and material losses. Though initially developed in zones of high seismicity and/or volcanism, EWS have been nowadays extended to coastal areas, mainly after the dramatic consequences of the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake and tsunami of 2004. 
The aim of this session is to discuss the different developments achieved on EWS, both for systems oriented to seismic, tsunami, and volcanic hazards. This includes contributions dealing with EWS methodologies, implementation, and performance worldwide, real-time automatic processing, communication systems, and prompt disaster assessment and response. In particular, they will be especially welcomed those contributions focused on Latin America, or those related with approaches that could be developed in the near future in our countries.
