YIPI Announcement

IRIS is preparing to submit a proposal to NSF for Major Research
Instrumentation (MRI) funding to form a Young Investigator Pool of
Instruments (YIPI). This pool of broadband instruments would be
reserved for the use of young investigators – representatives from
IRIS member institutions that have pursued career research for less
than seven years following any post doctoral assignment. These
individuals often need to establish their own projects in a short
time, making the 2 year wait to obtain instruments from the regular
PASSCAL pool of instruments intolerable. Availability of YIPI will
expedite the access of early career faculty to broadband seismic
instrumentation enabling innovative research and attracting more
promising students to pursue seismology.

One requirement of the MRI program is a match of 30% of total
acquisition costs from non-federal sources. The matching funds for
this proposal would be derived from university funds that are made
available to purchase private seismic stations for some young
investigators. In return for providing funds or existing instruments
as part of this special pool, IRIS would agree to provide repair and
maintenance of the instruments. IRIS will also reserve the
contributed stations for priority use by the university for up to 7
years. In this way, IRIS hopes to leverage these university assets to
provide start up funds to purchase of a set of seismic instruments to
expand opportunities for young faculty to participate in forefront
seismological research programs.

IRIS is interested in learning of any university that may be
interested in contributing broadband seismic stations to the YIPI pool
in exchange for 7 year priority access and lifetime maintenance and
repair. To obtain further information or express interest please
contact Jim Fowler at jim at iris.edu.
