We are announcing an improvement in our customized request processing which will assist with occasional overlapping data issues. This enhancement will be put into operation in the next few weeks. A new version of 'rdseed" software might be needed. Executive summary: * BREQ_FAST data requests will default to an 'M' quality merged product to reduce time tears * The DMC will begin shipping SEED volumes up to 30GB in size, (an upper limit imposed by the SEED format), where the new rdseed version 5.0 required. * Test volumes for you to download and use for testing (if you have your own SEED software and don't use rdseed) can be found on http://www.iris.edu/pub/pickup Background: Beginning in 2002, the IRIS DMC has accepted data from recording stations in two general forms, real-time and quality-controlled. These are tagged in SEED records as 'R' and 'Q' quality respectively. (Older data has retained the original 'D' designation when such distinctions were not available.) A complication that arises is that occasionally users receive data of two separate qualities for the same time period. Depending on the software used to read the SEED data this could result in unnecessary time tears (apparent gaps and overlaps). What is needed is a way to deliver a single, post-archiving quality of data that brought these disparate waveforms together in a seamless, sample-level join. The benefit to the user will be more continuous data, enabling easier data processing and less ambiguity. What's New: The DMC has developed procedures to create, on-the-fly, the most continuous data series possible from the highest quality data available in the DMC archive. In order to deal with the problems associated with multiple quality indicators and to differentiate these data from the SEED records supplied by the network operators, all data that has gone through this process will be marked as 'M' quality data (M standing for merged). The new process for creating 'M' quality data is to join archival 'Q','D', and 'R' data at the sample level such that a continuous waveform results. The 'M' quality data will NOT replace the original data in the archive as we consider it of utmost importance to preserve the original recordings as delivered. Instead, 'M' quality will be generated dynamically and will become the default. We will always give users the option to specifically request one of the original waveform streams (Q, D, or R) when desired. Our first rollout of 'M' quality data will be for our BREQ_FAST email request mechanism. When users specify a .QUALITY of 'B' (best), they will receive an 'M' quality data stream. Though there may be some software programs that cannot read this data quality yet, users can rest assured that the most recent release of rdseed v4.8 and later can recognize and process 'M' quality data. Other software at the IRIS DMC has also been adapted to 'M' quality. Another change occurring in the very near future is that the DMC will be producing SEED volumes up to 30GB in size instead of splitting large shipments into 2GB increments. In order to use such large files rdseed users will need to upgrade to a new 64-bit version 5.0 rdseed which will be released before large shipments commence. The funds are targeted toward Facilities that support EarthScope and MARGINS science objectives, with an initial emphasis on onshore/offshore studies of the Cascadia margin. The ARRA funds are being utilized by UNAVCO, IRIS, and OBSIP to improve seismic and geodetic datasets in the Cascadia region including improvements to real-time GPS capabilities, densification of the onshore seismic networks, and the construction and deployment of an array of ocean- bottom seismometers for offshore community experiments. A two-day workshop will be held October 15 and 16 in Portland Oregon to discuss the full range of opportunities associated with this new initiative. The primary goal of the workshop is to determine a deployment plan for the fleet of ocean bottom seismometers built with ARRA funds that are to be deployed in a community experiment in Cascadia beginning in the summer of 2011. Complementary objectives of the community-based workshop and resultant report are to: -Provide updates on the new Facilities that are being constructed with the ARRA funds. -Define high priority research questions that can be addressed with the offshore-onshore facility. -Develop recommendations for data products that will maximize the utilization of these new datasets. -Explore opportunities to develop complementary experiments as well as linkages with Neptune Canada, OOI, and USGS efforts in the region. The workshop will be held at the Hotel Monaco in downtown Portland. Partial travel support is available for approximately 55 participants. The deadline for registering and applying for travel support is July 15th 2010. Registration, hotel and travel information can be found at: http://www.certain.com/system/profile/form/index.cfm?PKformID=0x9169224b4b As additional information about the workshop becomes available it will be posted at: http://www.oceanleadership.org/2010/nsf-cascadia-initiative-workshop. The courses provide theoretical fundamentals and practical training in applied seismology, especially for geoscientists and technicians from earthquake prone countries. The program is particularly useful for seismological station and network operators, data interpreters and those concerned with seismic zoning and hazard assessment. These postgraduate crash courses are part of the educational and training program of the GFZ Potsdam and UNESCO in the field of geosciences and disaster mitigation. Information about the course, the course circular, scientific programme, and application form for the course 2010 can be downloaded from the GFZ website. The course 2010 is organised as regional course for countries from the Eastern Mediterranean, Central Asia, and the Near and Middle East. On behalf of the IRIS Board of Directors, I would like to solicit a few minutes of your time to help IRIS continue to thrive, by including your research findings in the ?accomplishments? section of the upcoming IRIS renewal proposal. As with the last IRIS proposal, we are collecting 1-page summaries of IRIS-related research that took place in the last 5 years. The proposal writing team will benefit greatly from early submissions (e.g., before the June 9-12 IRIS Workshop). It is inspiring to look back at the 1-pagers from the last proposal, and hope to capture even more excitement this time around. Please don?t hesitate to help us by encouraging your colleagues to submit their exciting findings, as it may immensely increase IRIS?s chance of renewal funding. The aim is to determine the material properties of interfaces (especially the subduction interface) at various depths, to try to understand seismogenic processes in a locked subduction zone. This project will combine active onshore-offshore seismic experiments (explosions and airgun sources) with passive (earthquake) recordings using short period and broadband recorders. We will develop new methods of comparing the data sets using reflected and converted waves from interfaces. We are looking for a keen PhD student to become part of the team of investigators including postdoctoral and senior researchers from Victoria University, GNS Science, University of Southern California and University of Tokyo, starting as soon as possible after 1 Oct. 2010. The first phase of the student project will be to work with the earthquake data to determine receiver functions from local and teleseismic records. If you are interested in this project, please contact Martha Savage and also apply to the Victoria University of Wellington, following instructions at http://www.victoria.ac.nz/fgr/prospective-phds/applying.aspx. The graduate school application deadline is 1 July 2010 and the application is free of charge. Successful scholarship students from any country will receive a NZ$21,000 stipend and will not have to pay tuition fees. The deadline is firm, so that students from foreign countries are advised to determine early whether they will need to take English languages tests or to get their transcripts translated.
