Subject: [SAC-HELP] Don't want to display error messages while running sac
	in fortran codes

Hi,

   SAC subroutines always show the error message when the header is not
defined in the sac files.

   But I wrote down my options if there is no header info, it will do
something else.

   Is there any way I can turn off the error ( not warning) message?

Hi there,

I've run into an error when using the beginwindow command in the newest
version (101.3b).  Plotting works fine in a single plot window, but when
I try to plot in a new plot window using "beginwindow 2" then "plot", I
get a bus error and sac quits.  This command is in a macro that worked
prior to changing to the newest version, and it's also a problem outside
of a macro, just simply trying to plot after a bw 2 command.

I'm running the binary distribution of 101.3b for MacOSX 10.5.8.

Hi everyone,

I see the same Error when trying to run a script with cron that calls 
sac. Starting the same script from a shell works fine, though. I've made 
sure that the environment for the cron-job is the same as for a normal 
login-shell. Has anyone had this problem before?

I have some SAC files produced by a code running on Linux (CentOS)  
with Xeon processors and when I try to read them from within SAC I get  
this message:

ERROR 1318: Header in disk file is out of date: (name of file)
Header version number is incorrect.
Header seems byte-swapped -- byte-swap file and retry

I am using MacSAC which I thought doesn't care if the file is little  
or big endian.
I cannot find the sacswap tool that apparently is distributed with  
MacSAC.

The same code running on SUN machines produces SAC files which I have  
no problem reading.

What to do?

MacSAC expects all binary SAC files to be big-endian.  MacSAC's utility for byte swapping is called sactosac and is distributed with MacSAC.  You probably want to use the -m option, which will byte-swap files that aren't big-endian, irrespective of the processor type you're running on.

Usage: sactosac [-vfm] [sacfile(s)]
  -f - force conversion even if format is native for machine on
       which program is running.  Otherwise only converts files
       that are in a different format than desired for current
       machine.
  -m - force conversion to MacSAC (big-endian, Sun) byte-order.
  -v - verbose - describe what program is doing and what it is
       converting.

Hi,

I am using the LIBSAC libraries to read header values into a fortran code. I
am having trouble reading in the 'dist' header field.

The rsac call in the fortran code does not return an error, as other header
values can be read. The call to get the 'dist' header value is:
call getfhv('dist',dist,nerr)

But when running on a sac file, I get an error saying that the field is
undefined...
ERROR 1336: Undefined header field value. dist

However, when I use sac and open this same file and list the header values,
there is a defined value present for this header.
$ sac << EOF
> r compR.lhn
> lh dist delta
> q
> EOF
 SEISMIC ANALYSIS CODE [08/24/2009 (Version 101.3b)]
 Copyright 1995 Regents of the University of California



  FILE: compR.lhn - 1

I would first suggest doing the following commands in sac.

read compR.lhn
write over
quit

When sac reads a file, it will compute location parameters and max/min/ 
mean values if it can.  The sacio library does not do this  
automatically, but it probably should.

If this does not work, then we have problems.

Hello Despina,

While it is technically possible for SEED volumes to contain event information including phase arrivals these SEED data structures are very rarely used, consequently the rdseed program does not do anything with them.  There is also the possibility to have phase arrivals (usually automated picks) embedded within the data streams themselves but these are also not considered by rdseed when converting data to SAC.

You could try using the Taup Toolkit, which has a utility to add specified
phase arrivals to the sac header values. It is beta, but it could be worth a
shot.

Dear Roger -

	Your polezero file probably has the wrong format.  This (not very helpful) error can come up when decoding the tables of data in that file -- my suspicion is that an integer or floating point value isn't specified correctly.  Check the file carefully, and if nothing seems apparently wrong, then cut out the bottom half of the file to see if the error persists.  If not, the problem is in the last half of the file.  If so, it is in the top half.  Iterate to isolation of the offending line.

	Lines beginning with '*' are treated as comments; that may help too in the debugging process.  Another helpful property to use debugging is that if pole or zero values are incompletely specified, they are treated as zeroes (e.g. ZEROS 5 with 3 zero values given implies two values zero; ditto for poles).  Comment values out and see what happens.

Greetings all,
I have a bunch of .sac files that I saved in labview and I can't seem to
open them in SAC. It says that when labview saves files as .sac they are
readable in SAC. Am I missing something here? I am using SAC Version 101.3b.

The error looks like this:

We are very close to coming out with SAC 101.4.  Prompted in part by a 
recent exchange on this listserv about calculating traveltimes in SAC, I 
looked at the SAC traveltime command.  It does not work as advertised.
In reviewing this,  we realized that neither of the major developers have 
used either of the SAC subprocesses, SSS or SPE, recently.

We would appreciate comments from those on this listserv who use these 
subprocesses as to what works or does not work.  As with the traveltime 
command, we most likely will not be able to "fix" things for this release, 
but we can at least update the documentation so that it represents 
reality.

Accompanying this new release will be an upgrade of the online SAC 
software manual, making it more consistent with what one gets from help 
within SAC.
