Hello webservice users,

The DMC has released a beta version of the ws-event service to include phase arrivals (for the ANF catalog) and fix a few bugs. Changes are backward compatible with the current release with one exception: the Flinn-Engdahl region notation has been reorganized to comply with schema and to clearly identify the parameters, more details below.

We invite testing and feedback for the beta service at the following URL:

http://www.iris.edu/wsbeta/event/

We plan on moving this version into production on Monday, February 6th. This relatively short beta cycle is due to related dependencies on other projects and the fact that most changes are backwards compatible.

Changes:

* New 'includearrivals' option includes phase arrivals in the results. Note that the DMC only has phase arrivals for the ANF (USArray TA) catalog.

* XML name space changes (e.g. q:quakeml).

* Reorganize the Flinn-Engdahl region code and name structure to be compliant with schema (EventDescriptionType).

* Fixes to radius selections near the poles. Note that radius selections can be very slow, queries become progressively slower as the search radius increases. As a work around a roughly equivalent "square" selection can be defined using the min/max latitude and longitude parameters and pruned to the desired set after retrieval.

* Refactoring of internal query logic for clarity and maintenance.

Version 2012.011 or later of the DMC's FetchEvent script will be needed to properly parse and print the newly arranged F-E region names. Older versions will continue to work but the region name will not be printed in the output. The new version is available now at http://www.iris.edu/ws/wsclients/ but should not be needed by users until the production service is updated.

New Flinn-Engdahl region code and name structure example:

	<description>
		<type>Flinn-Engdahl region</type>
		<text>228</text>
		<type>region name</type>
		<text>NEAR EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN</text>
	</description>

regards,
Web services team
