A postdoctoral position in global observational and computational seismology as part of a recently funded Australian Research Council Discovery Scheme is available in Seismology and Mathematical Geophysics Group at the Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES), the Australian National University (ANU).

Applications and inquiries are invited from outstanding individuals with a recent PhD in seismology, excellent analytical and computational skills, and, preferably, experience in earthquake source or waveform inversion studies. The position is for at least 2 years plus funding is available for at least one international conference per year. The successful candidate will be employed at ANU Academic Level A with a salary of $79,294 and 17% superannuation. All staff members employed at Level A who undertake research with a level of independence commensurate with that of an ARC/NHMRC postdoctoral fellow will be paid a salary loading which will take their salary to that equivalent to someone appointed at ANU Academic Level B ($86,286). The position start-date is mid-2014. Completion of the Ph.D. is required by the time of the appointment.

The appointment will focus on incorporating 3-D structural models of Australasia in estimating earthquake source parameters. The successful applicant will be involved in data processing, development of software, observation and interpretation, utilizing full waveform modeling. The science and software developed will underpin automated determination of characteristics of earthquakes and play a significant part in efforts to mitigate the impact of tsunamis. The work will be of immediate benefit for the continuous monitoring of the earthquake belts around Australia, since it will provide a rapid estimate of the nature of any significant seismic energy.

RSES has been rated as the top university program in Australia and in the top ten of its class in the world. The ANU is situated in the centre of the nation's capital, Canberra, between lake and mountain. Canberra is the cultural heart of Australia, with the National Gallery of Australia, the High Court of Australia and the National Museum of Australia - all a short distance from the city centre. The city is located about two hours drive to the beaches of the South Coast of New South Wales, about two hours drive to the Snowy Mountains and Mt Kosciusko ski fields, about three hours drive to Sydney, and about seven hours drive to Melbourne.

An online application is required: http://jobs.anu.edu.au/PositionDetail.aspx?p=3865

In addition to specific responses to each selection criteria, please provide your curriculum vitae containing details of research experience and a list of publications, a statement of research interests and the names and contact details of three referees.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact Dr Hrvoje Tkalčić (RSES; Hrvoje.Tkalcic<at>anu.edu.au) or the main collaborator on the project, Dr Andreas Fichtner (ETH; Andreas.Fichtner<at>erdw.ethz.ch) for additional information before applying.
