Post-doctoral Research Fellowship in Antarctic Seismology - 3 years fixed term

The Institute has a strong international research profile in the geophysical sciences, with particular strengths in seismology and tectonophysics. You will work on a new project funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council, aimed at determining the lithospheric structure in West Antarctica to evidence models of glacial isostatic adjustment.

You should be able to commence by 1st July 2015 or as soon as practicable thereafter.

You will have a PhD in seismology or a closely related area, good communication skills, ability to work as part of a team, and familiarity with theory and practice of modern data processing techniques used in broad-band seismology. Management of a large database will be required, together with probably 2 field seasons in West Antarctica. You will be expected to publish research papers and to present your research at national and international meetings.

Job Description

As part of the NERC funded project - Defining models of glacial isostatic adjustment in West Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula (UKANET): better constraints on Earth structure and uplift (Stuart, Brisbourne, Hooper and Whitehouse)

Main duties and responsibilities

* Help install and maintain a 2 year 10 station temporary seismological array in West Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula with the logistic help of the British Antarctic Survey. We are collaborating with the US Polenet consortium and their Phase2 temporary network will be contemporaneously deployed with ours for the 1st year
* Take responsibility for quality control and archiving of data collected from the UKANET array and, where appropriate, liaise with our US partners
* Undertake research in to the lithospheric structure and geodynamical evolution of the West Antarctica and its surroundings by appropriate processing, analysis and interpretation of the seismological data. Collaborate with our partners in Durham on the significance of the seismological results to Glacial Isostatic Adjustment models
* Contribute to the dissemination of research results by presentation at international meetings, maintenance of web-based project information, and preparation of manuscripts for publication
* Any other duties as may reasonably be required, consistent with the grade of the post

Person Specification

Essential

* A PhD in seismology or some closely related field by July 1st 2015
* A research publication record (or evidence of forthcoming publications) in relevant topics
* Familiarity with computerised techniques used in processing seismological data
* Willingness and medical fitness to undertake fieldwork in Antarctica
* Good communication skills
* Proven ability to work independently
* Experience of working effectively in a team


Desirable
* Familiarity with using the linux or unix operating system
* Experience in surface-wave analysis or body-wave tomography
* Previous experience of seismological fieldwork
