The Chair of Seismology that directs the Swiss Seismological Service at ETH Zurich (SED, www.seismo.ethz.ch) is offering a postdoc position in Statistical Seismology. We look for excellent scientists that will join ongoing interdisciplinary teams and research efforts, passionate about improving the understanding of induced earthquakes. In the context of the EC funded projects DEEP (www.deepgeothermal.org) and RISE (www.rise-eu.org) we want to develop advanced Operational Earthquake Forecasting models for both natural and induced seismicity.

The project DEEP (Innovation for De-Risking Enhanced Geothermal Energy Projects) brings together a distinguished and interdisciplinary team of scientists and practitioners from around the world committed to provide answers to the challenges related to induced seismicity and convincingly present more reliable procedures to assess and reduce the seismic risk. DEEP carries out an ambitious work program that builds on national efforts, bringing ongoing and planned, but currently fragmented initiatives together into a coherent international effort towards the ultimate goal of de-risking future geothermal projects worldwide.

The project RISE (Real-time earthquake risk reduction for a resilient Europe) aims at developing tools and measures to reduce future human and economic losses. RISE adopts an integrative, comprehensive view of risk reduction targeting the different stages of risk management. RISE assesses risk dynamically, taking into account varying time scales, locations, and contexts. Improved technological capabilities are applied to combine and link all relevant information to improve scientific understanding and inform societies.

You will join a multi-disciplinary team to develop and test innovative seismicity forecasting models and data-driven, real time risk assessment and risk mitigation approaches. The position is initially funded for three years, with the possibility of extension, part-time employment can be considered if justified. You will work in a highly collaborative team with close links to academic and industry partners and will have the opportunity to participate in student supervision, teaching and proposal writing. The position can be filled at a junior (post-doc) or a senior researcher (oberassistant) level.

You are highly motivated with the folowing requirements:

Experience in the analysis and forecasting of seismicity (natural and/or induced) using statistical, hybrid and physics-based approaches, and/or machine learning methods.
Experience in uncertainty quantification, ensemble modelling and real-time performance evaluation.
PhD in Geophysics, Geology, Physics, Engineering, Statistics, or equivalent,
Proven track record of excellence and innovation in a relevant domain of seismological research, and the interest to work in a highly collaborative and team-oriented environment.
Proficiency in written and spoken English, experience in project management, supervision etc, is considered as a plus.
