DATA SYSTEM SUPPORT SPECIALIST

Infrasound Laboratory (ISLA)
University of Hawaii-Manoa


A full-time position of Data System Support Specialist is available  
with the Infrasound Laboratory in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The position  
will ensure the integrity and continuity of data and provide network,  
system administration, and programming support for geophysical  
monitoring stations and systems. Occasional field support will also  
be included. This position is ideal for someone with a genuine  
interest and appreciation of the information contained within  
geophysical data streams.

The position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four  
year institution and at least 4 years of related experience.  
Applicant should have expertise in the acquisition, management,  
diagnosis, forwarding, processing, and archiving of real-time digital  
data. Programming experience in three or more of the following  
languages is required: Fortran, C, C++, SQL., Matlab, Java, and Perl.  
Extensive familiarity with Earthworm and/or Antelope software and  
database administration is highly desirable, as well as proven  
experience in configuring and managing networked Windows, Linux, and  
Solaris operating systems. Coordination of routine backups of  
critical data is necessary. The applicant must be able lift and carry  
50 lbs through rough terrain and work in long shifts, and be able to  
obtain a security clearance. Salary is negotiable.


About ISLA: Located on the western tip of the Big Island and a  
stone's throw from the beach, the University of Hawaii Infrasound  
Laboratory (ISLA) specializes in the use of sensitive microphones to  
monitor low frequency sounds in the atmosphere. One of our primary  
missions is to operate listening stations in the Pacific and Indian  
Oceans that are part of the International Monitoring System of the  
Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. We also conduct basic and  
applied research in acoustic source processes (such as volcanoes,  
surf, tsunamis, meteors, and rockets), propagation, instrumentation,  
signal and array processing, and software development. Routine field
