We are soliciting abstracts for Presentations/Posters for the following UNION
session at the AGU joint Assembly, 22-25 May 2007.
(Please note that abstracts are due no later than 1 March!)
Dear Colleague,
As you are probably aware, the upcoming 2007 Joint Assembly of the American Geophysical
Union will be held in Acapulco, Mexico, on May 22-25. This is the first AGU Joint Assembly
to be held in a Latin American country and offers an excellent opportunity for reviewing
the present state of knowledge on Caribbean tectonics and the related tsunami hazard, as
well as recent results and improvements on seismic and tsunami monitoring.
With this in mind, the following special session will be held in conjunction with the meeting.
Please contact any one of the conveners if you are interested in submitting an abstract
to this session.
Also, feel free to forward this announcement to anyone else that you think might be
interested.
Special Session S05: Neotectonics, Tsunami Hazard, and Monitoring in the Caribbean
The circum-Caribbean region is characterized by complex tectonic interactions that
produce large-scale deformation. Much of this deformation occurs at sea, generating
large local and regional tsunamis. Since 1498 there have been 95 tsunamis in the
circum-Caribbean region, including twelve that have resulted in fatalities. The
understanding of tsunami sources in the Caribbean is of utmost importance for the
quantification of the regional tsunami hazard, the evaluation of the potential risk,
and the monitoring of potentially-tsunamigenic sources.
We welcome contributions relevant to the understanding of the physical processes
involved in tsunami generation and the identification of the potential tsunami hazard
in the Caribbean. This includes contributions that present recent advances in seismic
detection and sea-level monitoring that would impact the present state of knowledge
on circum-Caribbean tsunamis and the implementation of tsunami-alerting measures.
