UNAVCO President - Job Description
Applications are invited for the position of President of UNAVCO.
Located in Boulder, Colorado, UNAVCO is a non-profit corporation that
supports and promotes Earth science by advancing high-precision
geodetic techniques such as the Global Positioning System
(www.unavco.org). Our member community includes U.S. and foreign
educational, non-profit, and other research institutions that have a
continuing commitment to scholarly research. The President reports
directly to the UNAVCO Board of Directors, which is elected by its
membership.
The Board of Directors seeks an individual with
(1) A demonstrated record of excellence, vision and leadership in
scientific research in the Earth Sciences;
(2) Highly-developed leadership, communication, and interpersonal
skills;
(3) A broad understanding of the geophysics and high precision
geodetic communities;
(4) Administrative or management experience in a cost and schedule
constrained environment;
(5) An advanced degree in the Earth sciences and 12+ years of work
experience;
(6) Experience in achieving consensus decisions among researchers
with diverse points of view;
(7) Excellent knowledge of UNAVCO's sponsor agencies (NSF, NASA,
USGS), their
programs and processes for competitive selection;
(8) The ability to travel frequently between Boulder, CO and
Washington, DC, and additional locations as needed.
The successful candidate is expected to provide vision and leadership
in developing and implementing strategies that support and augment
the geodetic science community that UNAVCO serves, while maintaining
an effective working relationship with sponsor agencies. The
President of UNAVCO has overall responsibility and accountability for
the technical, management, and budgetary success of UNAVCO, including
leading the development, preparation, and submission of community-
driven proposals. The President is expected to develop a strong
member organization to represent the interests of the geodetic
research community and to closely involve that community in strategic
planning and vision for UNAVCO.
The appointment is to begin as soon as possible. The minimum term of
the employment is negotiable with the initial term expected to be
from 3-4 years. Applications should include a complete vita, the
names and addresses of three or more references, and a statement
outlining the applicant’s vision for UNAVCO. Review of applications
will begin April 2, 2007, and will continue until the position is
