TRANSPORTABLE ARRAY LEAD CONSTRUCTION ENGINEER
The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS),
www.iris.edu, is a consortium of universities that obtains and
manages instrumentation systems for use by the academic community to
advance Earth Science. IRIS is managing the USArray component of the
EarthScope Project (www.EarthScope.org) and is responsible for
acquiring and installing seismometers across the U.S. as a 400
element seismic array migrates eastward to over 1600 sites.
Responsibilities of the Transportable Array Lead Construction
Engineer include: overseeing the excavation contractor and crew in
the construction of Transportable Array (TA) stations and ensuring
work is performed according to design and in a safe manner;
determining if any utilities or other equipment is in the
construction area and ensuring they are not disturbed; scheduling
construction activity and serving as liaison with landowners and
ensuring landowner’s satisfaction of completed work; preparing
construction progress reports for Coordinating Office; communicating
with various individuals and groups to explain various aspects of
projects.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of station siting criteria to
choose suitable locations, ability to learn technical aspects of the
station equipment, familiarity with GIS software and suitability
analysis, proficiency using computer applications and digital
photography, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Relevant work experience or college level work in seismology, geology
and/or physical science is required. Additionally, the ability and
willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions and travel to
remote locations, including driving about 150 miles per day, is
required, as is an excellent driving record. Information about the
